Theme & Summary

The main character of my book is Cassia who is just a normal girl the grew up in a society where her life was basically controlled by the officials, what her next action is or they want it to be even what she dreamt about. She finally figured out her controlling life and flee out of the society to find the person she loves, Ky was sent out of the society because he was revealing too much about the society's truth to Cassia. During that time, they found where the farmers lived and they helped reveal more about the Rising to Cassia and Ky. The Rising is what Cassia have been trying figured out in order to rebel against the society and t=gain back her freedom.

The theme of this book is.....
Character

Another main character of my book is Ky, he's and aberration in the society, his parents were rebellions that threatened the society so he is named as an aberration. He changed throughout the book by opening up more about his past life, how his used to live outside the society and how much freedom he had compared to the society, also about how his parents acted, how their thoughts and feelings were different from people in the society.

In the beginning of the book, he was suspicious seems like he has secrets that should be told, but as I read on he opened up and slowly unraveled all the secrets. As i read I started understanding and learning more about him. Ky's character slowly form to be more round and dynamic.
Analysis

An analysis that I have concluded from my book is that the Rising(a group of citizens that are planning an uprising to go against the society) is planning to destroy the society and take charge, even though that is what Cassia and Ky wants, to break free from the control of the officials in the society, but there is something suspicious about the Rising because for some reason Ky refused to join that group. The Rising seems like a good idea for the citizens in the society to break free from being controlled by the officials and not being able to have the freedom to live their own life the way they want, but why isn't Ky joining that group? Ky always have a good reason behind everything he does and for refusing to join the rising, there must be a reason why. that's why I think that the rising is going to destroy the society.

A quote in my book that shows Ky's refusal is on page 283, "Indie smiles, 'That you're going to be part of the Rising one way or another. You don't want to run and come with me. Fine. But you're still going to be part of the Rising no matter what .' She reaches for the miniport and I let her take it. 'You'll join because you want Cassia and it's what she wants to do.' I shake my head. No." Looking at this quote, the author wrote "No.'" in it's own sentence instead of continuing on by putting a coma after "I shake my head." makes it seem like he's really confident about his answer, unwavering even with Indie convincing him. This gave me an uncertain feeling about the Rising, as if they are not as pure and innocent as I think they are.

In my opinion, the Rising might not just be trying to gain freedom for the citizens, but they have other motives. For example taking over the society for themselves because of greed.

Analysis

I think that the officials are collecting data of their citizens because they are trying to research about something, about the life of a human being. They want to know how humans die and if its possible to revive them again. The officials collect datas of their citizens by attaching devices of them even when they are sleeping. The officials are able the predict the citizens' movements and read their dreams(my book is a science fiction book).

A quote to support this analysis is on page 245, "I don't want to disturb the tubes in case the Society has an alarm system, so I crane my neck until I can see the information on the tube in the center of the middle row. HANOVER, MARCUS. KA. The first notation is name, clearly, and the second is the abbreviation for Kenya Province. Beneath the province, two dates and bar code have been engraved . These are samples of people,..."

In my opinion, the officials are collecting  datas in order to advance their knowledge of human beings or their citizens. This way they will be able to farther control and protect the movements and thinking of their citizens, even more than they are controlling them right now in the book.

Reading Skills

I predict that the officials put poison in the blue tablets(helps a person survive for many days without water or food) that Xander gave to Cassia.

Cassia loves Ky and when she heard he was going to be sent out of the society, she did not want to seperated from him, that's why she decided to travel out of the province to find him. Since the officials had datas collected about her, they could probably predict that she was going to find Ky and Xander would try to give her the tablets to help her out when she's having difficulties finding food or water outside the society. Becuase Cassia knew too much about the society's actions, the officials want her to be killed, that's why they simply put poison in the tablets. Also, Ky is an anomalies(citizens themselves or their parents that have done something that went against the rule of the society), officials were trying to get rid of all anomalies so they sent him away not caring about his life or death.

A question I have is, why are the officials collecting datas of their citizens? Are they trying to figure out something? Maybe they are trying to figure out how people react to certain situation, so that they will be able to control their citizens more effectively.

A connection that I have is a text to text connection. I think that Cassia and Ky are similar to Romeo and Juliet, because Cassia and Romeo both were willing push through many dangerous situations just to be with who they love. Cassia was willing to go against the society to find Ky and Romeo was willing to go against his family to love Juliet.

Character

Cassia is the main character of my book, Crossed. She a round and dynamic character that has definitely changed over the course of the first book of the series to the second book, which is the book I am reading now. She changed from being an innocent girl that all her movements were being controlled by the society (sort of like their form of government in the book) and can't make decision for herself, to being mature after she has figures out the reality of the society she has always trusted, how she was being watched and controlled. Also that the society didn't used to be the same as it is now, where there was more freedom and the officials were less secretive. These are the reasons why she is rebeling against the officials. Ky helped her revolve into the character she is now, by revealing informations about the society in order to protect her. Since he used to live outside the society, he knew alot about what the society was like. Her grandfather also helped her by giving his item, a compact mirror containg a poem about rebellion in it. Over all, Cassia is now more mature and ready to protect the people she loves from the officials. I predict that the theme has something to do with a person's rights.

Plot structure

Some changes we made in this activity was making it more complex. We put section 7 in the beginning to create kind of a flash back atracting readers to read on. This will also let readers know a little bit of what happened In the end so they dont need to guess. Then for the rest, we switch up the sections completely. By doing this, we made the readers more interested by trying to piece different parts of story together and figure out what exactly happened. We also put "wolves" which is the last section I. The end to leave readers thinking about the story and making conclusions on what exactly happened.
